Preface
This book/website teaches a wide range of musical concepts and traditions through a large set of various exercises. These exercises were designed with early to intermediate level musicians undergoing their first private lessons in mind, meaning that some experience with reading sheet music is needed in order to complete them. Each exercise is structured in a way which will help the musician to not only identify and understand the indicated musical skill, but to then to see it used in a variety of musical contexts, as well as to interpret it through various improvisational/compositional examples. Thus, the organization of each individual exercise is labeled “Repeat”, “Respond”, and “Expand”, and the student may go through these as their understanding of the given topic grows. The skills being taught include various scales and rhythmic devices, and each page is organized by difficulty, with the exercises at the top teaching the easiest concepts and the exercises at the bottom teaching those most complex.
The purpose of this text is meant to be teaching and exposing early musicians to as many kinds of music and musical practices as possible, while they are still on the journey of forming their overall understanding of music. Although many of these are not commonly taught in the current canon of classical music, this site/book has been structured in a way that treats the musical devices used as completely equal, and shows a variety of contexts in which they might be found. This has been done as a means of not only teaching what these skills are and how to play them, but also in order to diversify the types of music and musical genres that an early musician comes in contact with.
If you have any questions, wish to send us exercises for the webpage, or just want to reach out, send us a message in the section below so we can get in contact with you!
